How To Take Care Of Your Birkenstocks
If you're walking down the street, you'll notice that almost every second person these days has a pair of Birkenstocks. Not only are they comfortable and trendy, but they're good for your feet! There can often be confusion though of how to care for them, so we're here to help.
Here are some tips on how to care for your shoes, to ensure you get the most wear out of them!
1. AVOID WATER
Water can damage the cork and dissolve the glue/sealant. If your shoes get wet, dry them slowly and away from direct heat, never directly in front of a heater. If the buckles are exposed to salt water, rinse them to avoid corrosion.
We also have a selection of waterproof Birkenstocks in the EVA range, including the Honolulu, Barbados, Arizona and Gizeh styles, which can be found here.
2. AVOID EXTREME HEAT
Exposure to concentrated heat can damage your Birkenstocks. Avoid leaving them in direct sunlight or in the car on warm days and keep them away from heaters and fireplaces.
3. AIR FOOTBEDS REGULARLY
Birkenstock footbeds are made of layers of jute and cork covered in a suede lining, and they’re designed to absorb moisture from your feet. Airing the footbeds prevents the build-up of odours caused by excess moisture.
4. PROTECT UPPERS
There is different cleaning advice depending on the type of upper your style of Birkenstock is made of.
- Please bear in mind that any cleaning or treatment can change the look and finish of the materials.
BIRKO FLOR – Simply wipe clean with a damp cloth. Carefully use a small amount of soap and water to remove stubborn stains.
BIRKO FLOR NUBUCK – To clean, brush lightly with a suede brush or an old toothbrush. We sell the Waproo Suede & Nubuck Nylon Brush.
SMOOTH LEATHER – Apply a leather cream such as the El Naturalista Seacream, to remove scuff marks and keep the leather supple.
OILED LEATHER – Use a suede brush, or to remove stains, apply a nubuck eraser block. We sell the Waproo Suede & Nubuck Cleaning Block. To restore/maintain the colour, apply a colourless leather conditioner.
